What is the role of an excavation marshall banksperson?

An excavation marshall banksperson has the knowledge to be able to efficiently and effectively monitor and control the work and movement of mechanical excavators on a work site in accordance with company procedures. What does the TUPPCO NPORS Excavation Marshall Banksperson training course include?

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an excavation marshall – banksperson
  • Have knowledge of the equipment to be used and be conversant with methods statements, risk assessments and permits to work
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for use
  • Conduct all pre-excavating checks
  • Agree communication signal and emergency procedures
  • Safe positioning of excavation marshall banksperson
  • Define and identify the different types of underground services
  • Identify the risks that excavations can present, and people may be affected
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Carry out exploratory tasks
  • Identify the risks of excavating near to underground services, and the safe digging practices that should be adopted
  • Carry out all end of shift and safe storage procedures

Theory assessment:

  • 20 multiple choice questions
  • 5 written questions
  • 4 marks per question
  • 80% pass mark required

Practical assessment criteria:

  • Pre use and operational checks of work area
  • Hand dig zone prior to machine excavating
  • Communication agreed before work starts
  • Signal to machine operator start, stop, position spoil
  • Signal to machine operator shutting procedure
  • Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
  • Training and testing over 1 day
