What is a telescopic handler?

Telescopic handlers are multi-purpose machines that lift, move and place material by using retractable boom. A telehandler — short for “telescopic handler” — accepts different attachments to lift, move and place materials ranging from bricks and gravel to lumber.
This will be included in the TUPPCO NPORS Telescopic handler training – N010

What does the TUPPCO NPORS Telescopic handler training course include?

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a Plant operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used and other relevant sources of information
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the Machine and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
  • Safely mount and dismount the machine
  • Start and stop the engine and safely move the Machine off and stop it safely
  • Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely laden and unladen, over varying terrain, rough ground, inclines, in open and confined areas
  • Conduct all necessary Safety checks at the work area
  • Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly Configure in readiness to Carry out lifting and Load handling tasks
  • Carry out lifting and Load handling tasks
  • Lift and transfer loads accurately and safely at different locations
  • Load and unload external transport safely
  • Fit, adjust and or remove attachments
  • Demonstrate Knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Venue and equipment requirements:

  • Suitable and safe area to lift and lower loads to 75% of total reach of machine
  • 3 x palletised loads (IBC containers or similar)
  • Lorry bed or flatbed trailer
  • Varying terrain and slopes
  • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
  • Suitable welfare facilities
  • Telescopic handler with pallet forks and any attachments
  • Operators’ manual
  • Risk assessment completed
  • In date thorough test examination for machine

PPE Requirements:

  • Suitable head protection
  • Suitable eye protection
  • Suitable hearing protection
  • Suitable work clothes including wet weather
  • Gloves
  • Suitable work boots including steel toe protection
  • High Viz

HSE further information:

Theory assessment:

  • 20 multiple choice questions
  • 5 written questions
  • 4 marks per question
  • 80% pass mark required

Practical assessment criteria:

  • Pre use and operational checks
  • Lift and lower palletised loads to a range of hights (low level, eye level, high level)
  • Load pallets on to trailer or similar
  • Stack pallets on top of each other
  • Place pallets next to each other
  • Drive through chicane, forwards and in reverse
  • Drive over uneven and sloping terrain
  • Pass mark is less than 40 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
  • Time allowed is 2 hours
