  • What is a rear tipping dumper?

    A rear tipping dumper is commonly used on construction sites. It is used to transport large loads of materials across a site, usually on rough, undulating terrain. Its ability to handle a mixture of terrain and carry large loads makes it a flexible piece of equipment.

  • What does the Tuppco training course include?
    • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
    • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular Machine to be used
    • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the Machine and explain their functions
    • Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
    • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
    • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for rear tipping dumper use
    • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
    • Prepare the rear tipping dumper for use & operate machinery safely and efficiently
    • Environmental considerations
    • Demonstrate Knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for Machine transportation
    • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
  • Venue and Equipment Requirements:
    • Suitable and safe area to operate and manoeuvre dumper
    • Excavator/loading machine
    • Bulk material to load and move
    • Varying terrain and slopes
    • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
    • Suitable welfare facilities

    • Risk assessment completed
  • Theory Assessment:
    • 25 multiple choice questions
    • 4 marks per question
    • 80% pass mark required
  • Practical Assessment Criteria
      • Pre use and operational checks
      • Drive through chicane forwards and backwards
      • Position for loading operation x 4
      • Drive over uneven and sloping ground
      • Demonstrate hill starts
      • Discharge the load over an edge or in excavation x 2
      • Discharge the load to form a stockpile x 2
      • Reverse 50 metres in a straight line through restrictions

      Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications

      Time allowed is 1 hour 30 minutes

Objective Of The Course

The aim of the Lantra Dump Trucks (DMP03) course is to ensure learners gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to operate dump trucks safely and efficiently, while complying with industry standards and site regulations.

Key Course Objectives:

  • Understand the controls, functions, and limitations of dump trucks

  • Learn correct PPE requirements and operator safety responsibilities

  • Perform pre-start checks, daily maintenance, and safety inspections

  • Safely load, transport, and tip materials in various environments

  • Manoeuvre dump trucks safely on:

    • Slopes

    • Uneven and soft ground

    • Confined areas

    • Designed haul routes

  • Control the machine smoothly under varying loads

  • Understand hazards including overturning, blind spots, ground instability, and pedestrian interaction

  • Develop safe work systems for dump truck operations

  • Build confidence and competence to operate dump trucks in demanding site conditions

By the end of the course, learners will be fully equipped to operate dump trucks confidently and safely within their workplace.
