Trailer handling involves safely coupling, towing, manoeuvring, reversing, braking, and uncoupling a trailer from a suitable towing vehicle.
Trailers are commonly used across a wide range of industries and applications, including agriculture, landscaping, grounds maintenance, construction, estates, land-based operations, commercial transport, and leisure activities such as towing caravans, boats, and horse boxes.
Correct trailer handling requires an understanding of towing weights, nose weight, vehicle and trailer combinations, coupling systems, braking, maintenance, legal requirements, and safe manoeuvring techniques.
The Lantra Trailer Handling course combines essential theory with practical, hands-on training and assessment.
Learners will develop the knowledge and skills required to:
Understand the legal requirements for towing a trailer on and off road
Understand the main principles of safe towing
Identify common causes of trailer-related accidents and how to avoid them
Understand different hitch types and towing combinations
Identify the maximum towing weights of specific vehicle and trailer combinations
Understand how towing weights apply to different types of use
Measure trailer nose weight correctly
Correctly set up a vehicle and trailer combination
Safely couple and uncouple a trailer
Carry out full pre-driving and pre-use checks
Understand the importance of trailer maintenance
Identify suitable towing and trailer combinations
Operate a towing vehicle and trailer safely
Manoeuvre through a series of turns
Carry out controlled braking exercises
Reverse a vehicle and trailer into a restricted area
Demonstrate safe trailer handling techniques
Complete the required practical assessment
raining can be carried out using a suitable towing vehicle and trailer.
Suitable towing vehicles may include:
Tractors
4×4 vehicles
All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)
Other suitable towing vehicles
The trailer should generally have a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) between 750kg and 3,500kg, in accordance with the Lantra course requirements.
Learners may use their own workplace vehicles and trailers, subject to inspection by the instructor to ensure that they are legal, safe, fit for purpose, and have the required plating and loading information.
Nose weight measuring equipment is also required for the practical training.
The course includes a combination of theory, practical instruction, and assessment.
Learners will be required to demonstrate their ability to safely prepare and operate a vehicle and trailer combination.
Practical activities can include:
Vehicle and trailer pre-use checks
Coupling and uncoupling
Checking towing and trailer weights
Measuring nose weight
Setting up the vehicle and trailer
Safe forward driving
Tight turns
Controlled braking
Trailer manoeuvring
Reversing into a restricted area
Safe completion of the towing operation
Post-use procedures
Successful completion requires the learner to meet the required assessment standards.

The aim of the Lantra Trailer Handling Training course with TUPPCO Training is to provide learners with the practical competence, operational skills, and safety knowledge needed to tow and handle trailers safely and responsibly.
The course combines classroom-based theory with practical training, allowing learners to develop the skills required to prepare, couple, operate, manoeuvre, reverse, brake, and uncouple a trailer safely.
Training is adapted to the learner’s existing experience and can be delivered for both work-related and recreational trailer use.
Upon successful completion of the assessment, learners will receive a Lantra certificate of competence and a Lantra Skills ID Card for the relevant certificate option.
The award demonstrates that the learner has successfully achieved the required standard of knowledge and practical competence in trailer handling.

The Lantra Trailer Handling course is typically delivered over 1 day, although the duration can be adapted according to the learner’s previous experience, the equipment being used, the modules selected, and the instructor-to-learner ratio.
TUPPCO Training can provide Lantra Trailer Handling training directly at your workplace, allowing learners to develop their skills using the vehicles and trailers they are required to operate in their normal working environment.
Where possible, learners should be trained using the same make and model of towing vehicle and trailer that they use within their workplace. This allows training to be directly relevant to their day-to-day responsibilities.
Our on-site approach enables training to be adapted to your specific working environment, equipment, site layout, and operational requirements.
Training can cover practical situations such as coupling and uncoupling, pre-use inspections, nose weight checks, forward manoeuvring, tight turns, controlled braking, and reversing into restricted areas.
Training can be carried out using a suitable towing vehicle and trailer.
Suitable towing vehicles may include:
