  • What is 4x4 off road vehicle?

    These vehicles have additional gear ranges. Although all-wheel-drive vehicles also deliver torque to both axles, ‘four-wheel drive’ generally describes vehicles that have off-roading capabilities. The term ‘4×4’ is used for this category, as well.

  • What does the Tuppco training course include?
    • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
    • Have a working knowledge of the manufacture’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
    • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
    • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
    • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for all-terrain vehicle use
    • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
    • Prepare the 4×4 vehicle for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently
    • Environmental considerations 
    • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
  • Venue and Equipment Requirements:
    • Suitable and safe area to operate and manoeuvre machine
    • Varying terrain and slopes
    • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork

  • Theory Assessment:
    • 20 multiple choice questions
    • 5 written questions
    • 4 marks per question
    • 80% pass mark required
  • Practical assessment criteria:
    • Pre use and operational checks
    • Travel up and down slopes
    • Drive through restriction forwards and backwards
    • Reverse 30 metres in a straight line, through restrictions
    • Use 2WD, 4WD, Differential lock
    • Load vehicle and secure
    • Hitch and travel with a trailer 
    • Drive over uneven and sloping terrain

    Pass mark is less than 30 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications

    Time allowed is 1 hour 15 minutes

Objective Of The Course

The aim of the NPORS 4×4 Off-Road Vehicle (N607) course is to equip learners with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to operate 4×4 vehicles safely and efficiently over challenging terrain while maintaining compliance with industry standards.

Key Course Objectives:
  • Understand vehicle controls, functions, and limitations
  • Learn correct PPE, safety responsibilities, and operational procedures
  • Conduct pre-use inspections and basic maintenance checks
  • Operate the vehicle safely over uneven terrain, slopes, mud, and adverse conditions
  • Navigate safely with passengers and/or equipment
  • Identify and manage hazards including unstable ground, obstacles, and weather conditions
  • Apply safe work practices and NPORS-approved operational standards
  • Build confidence to perform tasks efficiently while maintaining safety

By the end of the course, learners will be fully competent and confident in operating 4×4 off-road vehicles safely, enhancing workplace safety and productivity.
