  • What is the role of a vehicle marshal?

    A vehicle marshal is responsible for the movement of vehicles and plant on a construction site. They help to ensure that vehicles and plant can move around a site safely, taking into account the surrounding hazards, ground conditions and site layout.

  • What does the Tuppco training course include?
    • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a vehicle marshal
    • Have knowledge of the equipment to be used and be conversant with methods statements, risk assessments and permits to work
    • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for use
    • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
    • Agree communication signal and emergency procedures
    • Guide machinery in a forward and reverse direction including confined spaces and ‘blind areas’ safely and efficiently
    • Define and identify the different types of underground services
    • Carry out all end of shift and safe storage procedures 
  • Venue and Equipment Requirements:
    • Suitable and safe area to operate machine
    • Vehicles 
    • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
    • Suitable welfare facilities
    • Operators’ manual for machinery
    • Risk assessment completed
  • Theory Assessment:
    • 20 multiple choice questions
    • 5 written questions
    • 4 marks per question
    • 80% pass mark required
  • Practical assessment criteria:
    • Pre use and operational checks of work area
    • Communication agreed before work starts
    • Demonstrate hand signals 
    • Guide vehicle through restrictions forward and in reverse

    Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications

    Time allowed is 20 mins

Objective Of The Course

The aim of the NPORS Vehicle Marshal (N403) course is to ensure learners can safely and professionally guide vehicles and plant equipment, reduce workplace accidents, and improve site traffic management.

Key Course Objectives:
  • Understand the duties and legal responsibilities of a vehicle marshal
  • Learn correct PPE, safety rules, and site protocols
  • Conduct site and traffic flow risk assessments
  • Communicate using approved hand signals and radio systems
  • Guide vehicle movements in tight, restricted, or high-risk areas
  • Identify hazards such as blind spots, pedestrians, and plant activity
  • Apply safe work practices approved by NPORS
  • Develop confidence to manage vehicle movements on busy sites
